Distribution, speciation and composition of humic substances in a macro-tidal temperate estuary

چکیده
In aquatic environments, the term humic substances (HS) encompasses terrestrial and autochthonous refractory organic matter. HS are one of main fractions natural matter important chelators trace elements. environmental studies, determination is often restricted to dissolved fraction, content in suspended particles remains unknown. this work, we present composition dynamics along mixing gradient a macrotidal estuary both particulate fraction. After isolation using solid-liquid alkali extraction method, were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) electrochemical methods. The validated certified reference material, demonstrated low detection limit (μg-C L−1), good repeatability (7.7%) an excellent reproducibility (1.3%) was poorly prone contamination (filter blank < 1 μg-C). Analyses samples showed fraction contributing significantly total pool (3–20%) representing up 35% electroactive HS. Phase transfers from observed strongly affected maximum turbidity zone. Multi-detection SEC analyses differences molecular between fractions. Particulate more nitrogen-rich than non-conservative changes land-sea continuum evidence existence abiotic biotic processes that altered during their transit river marine waters.

Hydrodynamic and Sediment Modelling within a Macro Tidal Estuary: Port Curtis Estuary, Australia
An understanding of sediment transport processes and resultant concentration dynamics in estuaries is of great importance to engineering design awareness and the management of these environments. Predictive modelling approaches provide an opportunity to investigate and address potential system responses to nominated events, changes, or conditions of interest, often on high temporal and spatial ...
متن کاملDynamics in composition and size-class distribution of humic substances in profundal sediments of Lake Constance
Organic matter from profundal lake sediments was fractionated and analyzed with high depth resolution, and the size-class distribution of humic substances was determined by gel-permeation chromatography. Together with a depthdependent increase of the thermal stability of the organic matter and an increasing C/N atomic ratio of the humic acids, the size-distribution patterns of dierent fraction...
متن کاملVariation in Surface Turbulence and the Gas Transfer Velocity over a Tidal Cycle in a Macro-tidal Estuary
The gradient flux technique, which measures the gas transfer velocity (k), and new observational techniques that probe turbulence in the aqueous surface boundary layers were conducted over a tidal cycle in the Plum Island Sound, Massachusetts. Efforts were aimed at testing new methods in an estuarine system and to determine if turbulence created by tidal velocity can be responsible for the shor...
